Famalicão honoured the county's sporting merit yesterday in another edition of the Sports Gala, in a ceremony that was marked by Futebol Clube de Famalicão (FCF) winning five of the night's eight awards, including the "Excellence Award", given to SAD president Miguel Ribeiro.
The Famalicão club also won the jury's award in the "Sports Association/Club of the Year" category. Jorge Silva, former president of the FCF General Assembly, won in the "Manager of the Year" category, Vítor Barros, coach of Famalicão's under-19 team, won the "Coach of the Year" award, and Gustavo Sá, the club's young footballer, was voted "Male Breakthrough Athlete of the Year".
"It's not an individual award, it's a collective award. It's five years of a journey that won't stop here," said Miguel Ribeiro, who interpreted the award as recognition of the work of the Futebol Clube de Famalicão SAD team. "Fortunately, with competence, we have been able to honour the name we bear, the name of Famalicão," he added, leaving a commitment to "be stronger and stronger and have a stronger club."
In addition to the presentation of the jury's awards, the evening also honoured nearly three hundred athletes, coaches, associations, clubs and sports leaders who received the champions' award from the mayor for the national and international titles achieved in 27 sports in the 2022 and 2022/2023 seasons.
"Sport has an intrinsic power to project territories (...) you are the net contribution to making this happen in Famalicão," said the Mayor of Vila Nova de Famalicão, Mário Passos, adding that "with or without a title, we are already a true European city of sport and we will continue to work alongside athletes, coaches and managers so that we can continue to achieve more and more feats and successes."
It should be noted that at the 8th edition of the Sports Gala, jury awards were also presented to athlete Clara Carvalho, from Famalicense Atlético Clube, who won in the "Female Breakthrough Athlete of the Year" category, to João Pinheiro, from the Vila Nova de Famalicão Referee Centre, who won the "Referee of the Year" distinction, and the "Sporting Event of the Year", chosen by public vote, was awarded to the 2022 3H BTT Endurance Championship.
