The Vila Nova de Famalicão City Hall has already inventoried 700 trees since June last year, when it advanced with the preparation of the municipal inventory of the urban tree species.
The work, which is being developed in partnership with the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), includes geo-referencing and dendrometric, phytosanitary and risk assessment of trees.
The 700 public trees inventoried so far are essentially located in the urban perimeter of the city and in some parks and gardens, such as Parque 1.º de Maio and Parque da Juventude.
Complementary to this work, in-depth evaluations are also being carried out to assess the health of the inventoried trees, measuring the internal quality of the trunk and the roots and providing root mapping.
Evaluations, which according to the Councillor for the Environment, Hélder Pereira, "are fundamental for the planning of interventions to be carried out". In this regard, it should be noted that in 2022 the local authority carried out 400 pruning and safety interventions.
The preparation of the municipal inventory of urban trees is one of the guidelines set out in the draft Municipal Regulation on Tree Management.
The document, which defines the municipal strategy for urban trees, aims to create an action framework that promotes and systematises the municipality's interventions in the planning, implementation, management, maintenance and classification of the municipality's tree heritage, typifying the most frequent infractions, regulating administrative offences and setting the respective fines. The diploma applies to all public green spaces in the municipality, namely, parks, gardens, squares and public parks, streets, boulevards, cemeteries, among others.
