Vila Nova de Famalicão City Council started planting 429 new trees and shrubs of 23 different species in Devesa Park today.
The planting of this group of trees and shrubs, most of which are riparian, deciduous and native, will focus mainly on the banks of the River Pelhe and will make it possible to increase and diversify the tree area of the city's green lung, create more shaded areas throughout the park and, consequently, more areas for relaxing and socialising, and promote biodiversity by sheltering a greater quantity and diversity of fauna species.
It should also be noted that, in the future, this action would also mean a greater production of oxygen, a greater capture of carbon dioxide and an increase in the capacity to purify the air.
Most of the new trees to be planted are white willows, yellow willows, alders, ash trees and poplars, among others.
It should be remembered that this process began in September 2022, on the tenth anniversary of Parque da Devesa, with the pruning of trees with a view to reducing the weight of the canopy and balancing the trees.
This reinforced planting will involve a municipal investment of around 68,000 euros and is included in the application "Valorisation of the Urban Tree Structure - Vila Nova de Famalicão", approved under the Compete 2020 Operational Programme, relating to support for the "Climate Transition - Interventions for Territorial Resilience to Risk and (Re)afforestation of Green Spaces and Creation of Shadow Islands in the Urban Environment".
