Original Title: La Strada (Italy, 1954) | Directed by: Federico Fellini | Cast: Giulietta Masina, Anthony Quinn, Richard Basehart | Rating: M/12 | Running time: 105 min

There has never been a face like Giulietta Masina's. Her husband, Fellini, directed her in the role of Gelsomina in The Road, the film that established her international charisma. A fragile, naïve figure in a loveless world, Gelsomina is sold by her mother to Zampanò (Anthony Quinn), a strong, rough saltimbanco who takes her to work with him in his road life, giving her a burlesque act.
When this meets an old rival, the performer he goes by the nickname "The Madman" (Richard Basehart), the muscular man's fury is provoked to the breaking point.
A parable with musical notes of a tragic Charlot. Here Fellini traded any familiarity with neo-realism for poetic fable, inspiring one of his most popular characters, Gelsomina, born of a clown caricature made by the director on his notebook.
The Road won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1957.
