Sammy Fabelman loves cinema, an interest celebrated and championed by his artistically inclined mother, Mitzi. More adept in the sciences, Sammy's father Burt is supportive of his son, but sees filmmaking as an unserious hobby. Over the years, Sammy becomes the documentarist of the family adventures and the director of increasingly elaborate amateur film productions starring his sisters and friends. At 16, Sammy is both the primary observer and archivist of family history, but when they move to west, he discovers something sad about his mother that will redefine their relationship and change the future for both him and the entire family. Drama loosely inspired by Steven Spielberg's childhood.
