‘More and Better Years’ municipal programme once again recognised at national level - Portal do Município de Vila Nova de Famalicão - Portugal

The Municipality of Famalicão was awarded the Municipal Excellence Award 2025, in the area of sport, for the municipal programme ‘More and Better Years’. The award was presented at the III Social City Congress, held on 17 June in Vila Nova de Poiares, a meeting that brought together representatives from more than 200 Portuguese municipalities.

Awarded by Cidade Social, the Municipal Excellence Prize recognises good practices and the quality of municipal activities and programmes that reflect the ongoing efforts of municipalities to implement sustainable, innovative projects that have a real impact on their territories. 

In the case of Vila Nova de Famalicão, the ‘More and Better Years’ programme stood out for its application of pioneering solutions in the field of active ageing and inclusive sport, combining scientific, technological and community approaches that promote active and healthy ageing and foster social inclusion through sport.

It should be remembered that ‘More and Better Years’ is a sports programme created in 2001, which currently has 4,750 participants spread across dynamics linked to senior sport, adapted sport and rehabilitation. In 2024, it crossed borders via ‘More and Better Years Europe’, funded by the European Commission's ‘Erasmus+’ programme, which earned it the Erasmus+ Award in the ‘Inclusion and Diversity’ category last December.
