Mário Cesarinny was a central figure in surrealist intervention in Portugal from the beginning. Experimentation and a break with more academic practices elevated his work into a particular existence, making him stand out among his peers. To be in front of Mário Cesariny’s works is to be exposed to his creative will, his thought, his curiosity and, above all, his exaltation of life being “so close, so real”. Here we can observe a small sample of the incalculable culture heritage that he left us.
Everything reflects his readings, his way of being, his unique way of creating, in an attitude of contemplation and poetic expression. We find cobblestones, works of art, photographs, cats and more cats, and everything he pasted on the walls of his house. A pelmet takes us to his imaginary window. Fragments of his existence that cohabit with us throughout this year, in which we celebrate the centenary of his birth. If we want to summarise Mário Cesariny in one sense, we can say that above all he was a poet of love, of amour fou, desired, lived or barely lived, abandoned or betrayed, blissfully sung or remembered and recreated elegiacally. Mário Cesariny left on the ship of mirrors on 26 November 2006.
