Former mayor of Vila Nova de Famalicão Paulo Cunha will be honorary citizen of the municipality from July 9, the day on which the county celebrates the 37th anniversary of the elevation of Vila de Famalicão to the status of city.
The mayor of the municipality, Mário Passos, will take to the next meeting of the City Council a proposal of public homage to 18 personalities and 10 institutions that stood out in the most diverse areas of action in the community, from benevolence to culture, from sports to economy and municipal merit.
The attribution of the municipal awards will take place in a solemn public session commemorating the city, to be held on July 9 (Saturday), at 18h00, in Paços do Concelho.
In addition to Paulo Cunha, who was mayor of the municipality between 2013 and 2021, Mário Passos proposes to honour with the medal of cultural merit the chefs Álvaro Costa and Lígia Santos, the journalists Rui Lima, Cristina Azevedo and Sandra Gonçalves, the teachers Lopes Cordeiro and Martins Vieira (posthumously) and the president of the Ribeirão Centre of the League of Combatants.
The medal of economic merit will be given to the entrepreneurs Albino Mesquita Ribeiro, António Martins Couto, Carlos Alberto Fernandes da Silva, Carlos Moreira da Silva, Francisco Oliveira, Manuel Leitão de Oliveira e Silva and Maria Leonor Seara Barroso Oliveira.
The Sports merit this year goes to Carlos Alberto Perliteiro from Liberdade Futebol Clube and Rui Grenha (posthumously), from Grucamo.
In terms of institutions, the local authority intends to honour, in the cultural dimension, the Gavião, São Cosme, Oliveira Santa Maria and Cruz Scout Groups and Koklus - Fradelos Youth Association. With economic merit the companies Fogos de Artifício Varziela, Lavandaria Tamico and Manuel de Sousa Lopes, S.A. In sport, the Karatté Shotokan de Delães School.
"Valuing good community examples is an obligation of the municipality, due to the associated act of justice, but it is also a way of promoting exemplarity, giving signals to the community for how much it depends on individual and collective action for its strength", says Mário Passos.
