Last Thursday, the Vila Nova de Famalicão City Council approved the contract for the construction of the future Athletics Centre, an investment of more than 6.2 million euros that will provide the municipality with a state-of-the-art sports facility, suitable for the practice of 23 disciplines of the sport.
The municipality now wants to get the work underway by the end of the year. The process is only awaiting prior approval from the Court of Auditors.
‘It's a great project, much sought after by us, by the people of Famalicão and by the athletes,’ said the Mayor, Mário Passos, at the end of the Town Hall Meeting.
‘Just recently, in connection with the Olympic and Paralympic Games, we heard athletes calling for more and better conditions so that we can achieve more sporting successes and this facility aims to make just that contribution, thanks to the excellent conditions it will offer to improve sporting practice and so that we can achieve the successes we so desperately want,’ added the mayor.
The facility will be built on a 30,000 square metre plot of land located in Talvai, in the north of the city.
The project includes the construction of an athletics track, with eight lanes and indoor grass, stands and various support buildings, changing rooms, as well as the construction of all the exterior arrangements outside the perimeter of the track, including a gravel warm-up course and lighting, outdoor stands, a car park and roads.
Famalicão is the municipality with the most federated athletes in the district.
‘The project had several constraints, but we never gave up and we knew how to overcome barriers,’ said Mário Passos, who is convinced that the facility “will qualify the area and put Famalicão at the forefront of sport, creating ideal conditions for the sport”.
The project has an execution time of 645 days.
