Vila Nova de Famalicão is a
"locomotive of sustainable development of the Ave region, the Northern region and the country itself". The statement is from Professor Ricardo Reis, from the Centre for Studies and Opinion Polls of the Portuguese Catholic University (CESOP-Local), and was expressed during the presentation of the 'Municipal Sustainability Index 2022', which took place last Monday, in the Town Hall.
The municipality of Famalicão reached an overall score of 69.3, in the index, above the national average (63.8) and the Northern region (63.6). This score means that the municipality has already fulfilled almost 70% of the path towards sustainable development, according to the data obtained through the 133 indicators that compose the report.
According to Ricardo Reis, the evolution of Vila Nova de Famalicão has been of
"positive stable growth and always above the national average", with emphasis on
"a more accentuated growth and an improvement especially in the social issue" and a high performance in the area of Education.
"It is another exercise of transparency of the Municipality" highlighted the Mayor, Mário Passos, mentioning,
"this study presents very positive results, regarding our municipality".
"These are results that I register with enormous appreciation and satisfaction, but (...) we want to continue to evolve towards an increasingly solid social and environmental cohesion and also contribute more and more to the national targets", said the mayor, assuming that
"these indexes are very important working tools to understand where we are and how we are, and, based on this information, to define and adjust public policies".
It should be noted that the indicators used in the report represent the goals set out in Agenda 2030, a global action plan that brings together the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as per the United Nations (UN) resolution, 'Transforming our world: Sustainable Development Agenda 2030', unanimously approved by 193 Member States, at a summit held at UN headquarters in New York (USA), on 25 September 2015, which has been in force since 2016, until 2030.
The 'Municipal Sustainability Index' shows the degree of compliance with the SDGs in Vila Nova de Famalicão and was prepared by CESOP-Local, in partnership with the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, and is available for consultation on the website
