Domitila was born from a song cycle commissioned to deal with the relationship between D. Pedro I and the Marquesa de Santos, Domitila de Castro Canto e Melo. The work, commissioned as a song cycle, was not, in the end, realized, and the composer chose to compose an opera, making use of the instrumental formation pre-established by the organization sponsoring the project: "(...) it was a circumstance, it was what I had available. Actually, when it was proposed to me, it would be the sung letters, only the sung letters. I decided to tie all the cards together and make an opera. And what I had available for that show, scheduled for the CCBB of Rio de Janeiro, was a singer, the cellist and the clarinet". (Ripper, 2014)
